Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as "Lou Gehrigs Disease, commonly strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons, that lead from the brain to the spinal cord. As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibers that normally result in muscle movement, and in most cases this will lead to paralyzed areas of the body.
